A Car Free London is the sister site to LondonUnlocked, and aims to look at the different ways to get London moving.
Traffic in London is at a standstill. Why? Because there is little fresh thinking on the subject.
It seems easier for many if some truths of London transport to go untested:
- If the Congestion Charge is really there to protect the environment, why can’t something be done about the phasing of the traffic lights? Thousands of tonnes of carbon are dumped into the environment from cars idling at traffic lights.
- What is the point of encouraging children onto school buses if the same buses are then hit by a +£100 weekly carbon tax? It will be cheaper for schools and parents to encourage individual journeys.
- Why stick with arcane rules and systems for heavy deliveries? Lorries cannot perform nighttime deliveries thereby clogging our roads during the day. What of containerisation? What of using the canal network?
We aim to test the established wisdom and, with LondonUnlocked, provide alternatives to the norm. Alternatives that our representatives should consider.
